Question

How can I avoid nitpicking others' incorrect use of words? I like to be precise about the way I use language, which often causes arguments with people about the meaning of the words they use. How can I avoid this?

Answer

Refocus your attention on accuracy. You'll scratch your itch and add value at the same time. To do this, remind yourself of what SITUATION you are in for all communication. Silently say to yourself before entering any room, "I am entering an OFFICE", "I am entering a RESTAURANT for a date," "I am entering a CAR for a commute." If there are people, add role cues. "I am entering an OFFICE to meet with my MANAGER" etc.

Situational priming will link your instinctive attraction to precision to the specific environmental elements that you might need to actually hit with accuracy. Role cueing will further refine your calibration of appropriate levels of precision for the situation. Practice with extreme cases: hang out with a child or a foreigner where your strength becomes either a weakness, or is put out of play altogether.

Also keep these slogans in mind:

  • Roughly right
  • Good enough
  • Distinction without a difference

Put them on post-it notes on your monitor. Make an image with those cue phrases and set it as the wallpaper/locked screen of your phone. Train yourself to focus on the nose of the person you're speaking to, and imagine a post-it with the cues there.

And yes, I am a fellow sufferer, and I've basically mastered the problem as much as I care to. That's why I know these things :)
