Question

Is it a bad idea to write a college application essay about how much one hates America?

Answer

Don't listen to the positive thinking bores here. Actually, wait, make THEM the target. Blame them for all that's wrong with America. It is actually a seriously strong case. Read Barbara Ehrenreich's "Bright Sided" for an example. There's plenty of raw material for smart negativity.

You can do this. But you need to turn it into vicious dark humor of the Lewis Black variety. Negativity is a powerful force if creatively and skillfully unleashed with an undercurrent of compassion, especially against the delusions of the bright-sided. Without the skill it is called "complaining." There's only one thing more annoying than complaining and that's bright-sided cheerleading by the sheeple. Don't let them drag you down to their level of banality and cluelessness.

These "positive" people are going to go all negative on me for saying this to an impressionable young person and "poisoning" you (ironic, huh?), but don't lose your dark edge; don't repress and deny your shadow side. Thats just dangerous.

Engage it. It will be a truer friend to you than your positive side. Just get creative with it. And don't lose empathy and compassion along the way. I owe about 100x more to negativity than positivity for the good things in my life. Yes, paradoxical but true.

And hey, if it fails, you've got a head-start on a stand-up career. That's better than what you'll get with a failed attempt at faking a saccharine positivity you don't actually feel: a loss of drive and passion for life.
