Question

What are some ways of increasing one's personal return on common-good efforts?

Answer

Do things that:

  1. Generate both personal and commons returns, and share generously, erring on the side of giving away more than you keep.
  2. Make sure that the resultant status difference that results for you, above the community, doesn't increase power distance to the point that people have a reason to resent you and drag you down
  3. Conform to this design principle: you have to respect people's innate sense of "fairness" but you don't have to answer to the self-proclaimed stewards of the commons, only to the broader body of stakeholders.
Don't get trapped into debating somebody pretending to represent the 'common good.' By definition, the 'common good' does not really have representatives. Anyone seeking to represent it is trying to exploit it as well, for personal gain, exactly as you are.

And ultimately, don't be afraid to strike out on your own if necessary. The 'common good' is not a divine value. Just an expedient arrangement of aligned interests among very human stakeholders who are no saints themselves. Accountability is good, but remember it is defined by humans just like you, and there is no reason to assume that the majority's idea of accountability is better than your personal idea of accountability.

Stay true to yourself and deeper principles. Don't get caught up in 1% vs. 99% rhetoric, whichever side you happen to be on in a particular commons issue.

What people think of you is data to be processed, not an uncorrupted signal of The Truth to leash yourself to. Periodically watch Children of the Corn, read Lord of the Flies etc. if you find yourself getting too communitarian.
