Question

Why does the idea that atheism is a religion keep getting repeated?

Answer

In the best-case, best-faith version of the argument, there is actually significant merit to it. You picked your points of comparison that show the two are dissimilar. It is possible to pick a different set of points of comparison where the two are more alike than not.

* Degree of need for making metaphysical sense of the universe
* Importance of a Grand Narrative with similar arcs (thermodynamics/entropy metaphors or Singularity beliefs)
* Level of social engagement in civic issues
* Similar levels of political engagement
* Similar appreciation of literature, metaphor, narrative
* Similar focus on inner life, cognitive development (yes, believe it or not, people who try to learn the Bible or Koran chapter-and-verse are trying to develop their minds; they are just using different training equipment)
* Similar intelligence levels/distribution (Einstein was religious seems like. So was my PhD advisor, also a very smart guy)
* Similar seeking of intellectual leadership (Dawkins) and axiomatic fundamental beliefs (Darwin, 2nd law) over individualist behavior and/or non-fundamentalist world views

Etc. etc.

Both theists and atheists have more in common with each other than happy-go-lucky people who don't think about metaphysics or the human condition, Big Questions at all and instead devote their minds to say, Snooki, beer etc.

You may not like theists, but don't be so darn afraid of being grouped with them on occasion.

Would you rather be locked in a room with Aquinas or an atheist version of Snooki? (I don't know her actual religious beliefs)

I am personally atheist, but not militant about it because I value very different points of comparison with others. In many situations, I would likely ally myself with the religious due to similarities.
